It's standard policy for JW writers to ``slip in'' even major changes in doctrine or policy, deliberately avoiding a forthright statement of ``heads up,'' i.e. ``take careful notice of this as it represents a change in our previously held views on this topic.''
Only the most alert and aware JWs will catch these carefully nuanced shifts; they're lost on the casual reader.

Ozziepost hit's the nail on the head in his post. Jehovah's witnesses' theology basically is neo-Judaism; formalistic, works-oriented and legalistic. When invoked, the name of Jesus is to them little more than an ``area code'' to dial up when trying to reach God through prayer.

The GB
by Liquidizer inas usual, they always want to emphasise their role as a only chosen representative of god like moses, eliah or john or whatever.
of course if they'd be like moses, their words should be taken seriously, but are they in that position?
the very history of the society illustrates it's just the opposite.

Godrules,
The simplest question to ask is: What have they ever gotten right? What books published longer than ten years ago do they still consider current, and can turn to and say ``read this again; Jehovah's people hit the nail on the head!" Certainly not the Your Will Be Done on Earth nor the Let Your Name Be Sanctified, nor the May 22 1969 Awake! which assured JW teens graduating in the high school class of 1969 that they would not grow old, much less die.
If you think it honors God to forge his name onto a bum check, or to hold his name up for ridicule by ascribing such twaddle to Him, you're beyond help. Do you think this material can stand up to objective critical scrutiny? Would you be willing to defend it in an honest public forum? Good luck (oh, no, excuse me, I forgot): good fortune. -

A postscript to Maximus' remarks, in which he makes note of the Society's begrudging endorsement to seek help, in their words ``from a physician.'' It seems significant to me that they avoid saying ``from a qualified mental heath professional.'' I'm afraid most of these latter would urge the patient to lose their guilt-inducing religion for starters.

I know they have.. what's more they have a little bookshelf devoted to them. My source: a long-time Bethel buddy who made it to the writing department before he split.

OK TO LIE FOR GOD ????
by ladonna infound this on the net......very interesting seeing as it comes from the jw's own literature.. 1960 "the scriptures justify the 'war strategy' of hiding true facts from the enemy.
" (watchtower may 15, 1960, page 295) .
1960 "as a soldier of christ he is in theocratic warfare and he must exercise caution when dealing with god's foes.

Ladonna,
Right on ladonna. And as the Jummy Swaggart and voting fiascos demonstrate, ``those not entitled to it (the truth)'' include the dubs as well as the rest of non-JW humanity.
Once a month at the Kingdom Hall and at every circuit assembly, the local financial accounts statements are read. When will the worlds's greatest bean-counters print an accurate financial statement for all to see? Never, since we're `not entitled.'' -

Hello Beroea,
I think that perhaps the silliest rules are those arbitrary ones of dress and grooming. The only true Scriptural parameters on dress are neatness and modesty.
Apart from that, the continuing disapproval of beards is but one indication of how sadly out-of-touch the leadership. It's common knowledge that a well-tended beard bears no stigma whatsoever.
However, with this issue as with so many others, money often influences the Society's attitude. I recall one specific, prominent instance of this in regard to facial hair.
Remember the Society's film ``Heritage'' of the early sixties? It was produced by a local brother, one Timothy Galfas, St. Galfas, a wealthy, highly successful photograper and producer (he even did several of Rod Serling's ``Night Gallery'' episodes).
He sported -- and flaunted -- a goatee in the early sixties, when it was considered particularly abhorrent, conducted the WT and gave talks on the circuit assemblies. Why? Because of his prominence, wealth, and generosity to many high-level Bethelites, including Knorr and Henschel. His colleagues on the local servant body couldn't understand how well regarded he was since months would go by without his having gone out door to door.
I understand he later crashed and burned, ``truth''-wise.
Also, I love the semantics used to justify the use of ties and suits... when is it ``adhering to local standards for businessmen''
or ``conforming to worldly standards?''..... Whenever the Society says it is, of course. -

What's always puzzled me is how a person acquires points with God simply by dying in ignorance before Armageddon. JW dogma insists that all non-JWS unlucky enough to be alive at Armageddon are done forever, but if they die beforehand, they wine up in Sheol, mankind's common grave and hence are subject to a resurrection.
Doesn't make any sense. -

Hi Godrules,
I hope the WTS does provide a suitably senior rep to defend its position, but I wouldn't count on it. If I recall the piece that ran on "Sixty Minutes" by Leslie Stahl on JWs and child custody, was an embarassment for the Society. The GB went into hiding and the only loyal JW they could muster was an ill-at-ease local JW who happened to be a lawyer.
